Situated in the heart of Melbourne's unique sports and entertainment precinct, Olympic Park Stadium has always been a special part of Melbourne, the venue and it's surrounds owning an extensive history.

Olympic Park Stadium was originally constructed for the 1956 Olympic Games, where it was used for athletics training and preliminary round games for the Olympic soccer competition.  Prior to the Games (at the Australian Athletics Championships), John Landy performed his famous sporting gesture where he turned back to help fallen comrade Ron Clark, who had tripped and fallen over.  Despite losing precious time, Landy proceeded to bolt away and win the one mile race in just over four minutes.  The moment is immortalised with a statue over the road, in the Hisense Arena forecourt.

Following the Games and over the subsequent decades, soccer, athletics and (since the advent of Melbourne Storm in 1998) rugby league, have been mainstays. The ground has also been used for other sports, including rugby union internationals and even a Michael Jackson concert in 1987.

In 1997, Olympic Park was upgraded with a new international standard athletics track, refurbished seating, new functions rooms, corporate facilities, landscaping and signage.

Today, Olympic Park Stadium features the first accredited FIFA soccer pitch in Australia, an athletics track, hospitality facilities and can accommodate up to 18,500 people.

Olympic Park Stadium is located approximately one kilometre from the Central Business District and is easily accessible via tram, train, bus and watercraft.
