The Melbourne Vixens are an Australian netball team that compete in the trans-Tasman ANZ Championship. An amalgamation of the Melbourne Phoenix and Melbourne Kestrels from the previous Commonwealth Bank Trophy, the Vixens split their home games between the State Netball and Hockey Centre and Hisense Arena.
After finishing fourth in the inaugural season, 'The Vix' lost just one game en route to the 2009 ANZ Championship in front of 9500 fans at a packed Hisense Arena. The Vixens have built a strong following and their fans' high expectations were duly rewarded with a decisive 54-46 victory over the Adelaide Thunderbirds.
Combining the best of Trans Tasman and parochial state versus state rivalries, the ANZ Championship has achieved great things in its short lifespan. Although the Vixens struggled in their title defence, a home and away full house crowd of 8770 at Hisense Arena against the Thunderbirds showed that support for netball is stronger than ever.
