Melbourne & Olympic Parks

Melbourne & Olympic Parks came into existence in 1995 and, as the name suggests, is the product of the joining together of two distinct venues; Melbourne Park and Olympic Park. As well as hosting an extensive range of events such as international tennis, soccer, rugby union, rugby league, athletics and cycling, dirt bike races, ice skating, music concerts and family shows, Melbourne & Olympic Parks is the administrative and training home to various sporting organisations.

Located 5 minutes walk from Melbourne’s CBD and separated from the Botanic Gardens by the Yarra River, Melbourne & Olympic Parks comprises: 

 

Melbourne Park

  • Rod Laver Arena, (15,000 seats)
  • Hisense Arena, (10,000 seats)
  • Melbourne Park Function Centre, (1800 sq/m)
  • The Oval at Melbourne Park
  • Margaret Court Arena, (6,000 seats)
  • Player Cafe
  • Tennis Australia Administration
  • Two show courts
  • 19 further outdoor Plexicushion tennis courts

Olympic Park

  • AAMI Park (30,050 seats)
  • Olympic Park sports field, (under reconstruction)

Adjoining the 40 hectare precinct are four tram stops (route 70), a taxi rank, a river jetty and three pedestrian bridges linking the precinct with the MCG. All of these facilities are under the management of a single administration, the Melbourne & Olympic Parks Trust

 

Melbourne & Olympic Parks Trust

The Melbourne & Olympic Parks Trust (MOPT) was established on 5 October 1995 in accordance with the provisions of the Melbourne & Olympic Parks Act 1985 (as amended). It was created by the merger of the National Tennis Centre Trust (established 13 November 1985) and the Olympic Park Committee of Management (formed originally in 1909). Under the Act the relevant Minister is the Honourable Hugh Delahunty MP, Minister for Sport and Recreation (& veterans' affairs).

MOPT's functions include the responsibility for the care, improvement, use and promotion of Melbourne Park and Olympic Park, to operate them efficiently and effectively to obtain their best possible use, to provide coordinated planning of the venues and to be responsible for their proper financial management.

MOPT operates to provide world class facilities and ancillary services, for the conduct of sport, entertainment and function events, primarily for the people of the State of Victoria.  As a precinct, Melbourne & Olympic Parks has grown and evolved over 100 years, and continues to do so with the opening of AAMI Park.  The recently commenced Melbourne Park redevelopment project which will further entrench Melbourne & Olympic Parks' standing as Australia's premier sports and entertainment precinct.
